Selecting Replacement Heifers

چکیده

Colorado State University researchers (Gutierrez and Dalsted) conducted an in-depth economic analysis of raising replacement heifers up to 31 months of age, the time at which their first calves were weaned. They calculated break-even values that were based upon all costs, minus the value of the first calf at weaning. Depending upon heifer retention rates and reproduction rates, heifer break-even values ranged from $601-$733 when production costs were normal (expected). If production costs were 15 percent higher than expected, the range was $692-$832. If production costs were 15 percent lower than expected, breakeven values ranged from $407-$634. Depending upon the situation, heifer breakeven values may differ by as much as 100 percent ($832 vs $407). Therefore, it is worth the effort to estimate the cost of producing a replacement heifer in your operation. If you find the cost to be inordinately high, one of two things should be done: (1) examine the total heifer development program and make the changes needed; or (2) consider purchasing replacements, if they can be bought at a price, and level of quality, that makes it economically advantageous to do. Of course, when purchasing replacements, herd health implications must be given serious consideration.

Proceedings, Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle

Traits used for selecting replacement heifers and feed resources used to develop replacements can have a major influence on long-term profitability of a cattle operation. The direct expense of either purchasing or developing heifers is often obvious for producers, however, the impact the management system used for rearing heifers and selection criteria have on lifetime productivity is much less...

Optimum Body Size of Holstein Replacement Heifers1

Criteria that define optimum body size of replacement heifers are required by commercial dairy producers to evaluate replacement heifer management programs. Historically recommended body size criteria have been based on live BW measurements. Numerous research studies have observed a positive relationship between BW at first calving and first lactation milk yield, which has served as the impetus...

Making Bull Selection Decisions for Heifer Matings

There are numerous factors which need to be considered when selecting a bull to mate over heifers. In many cases, the primary aim of the beef producer is to produce a live calf which is born unassisted, with other economic traits (e.g. growth) of secondary importance. Traditionally this has been done by selecting a ‘heifer bull’ to mate over the heifers; that is, a bull with a low birth weight ...

Physiology and Endocrinology Symposium: Nutritional aspects of developing replacement heifers.

Studies in numerous species provide evidence that diet during development can mediate physiological changes necessary for puberty. In cattle, several studies have reported inverse correlations between postweaning growth rate and age at puberty and heifer pregnancy rates. Thus, postweaning growth rate was determined to be an important factor affecting age of puberty, which in turn influences pre...

Management Considerations in Holstein Heifer Development

The purpose of the heifer herd is to provide replacements for cows leaving the herd and to improve genetic progress. First-lactation cows significantly contribute to herd production and profit. A recommended goal for dairy replacement heifers is to calve at 24 months of age with a targeted postcalving body weight of 1250 pounds. A common misconception is that this goal is either unattainable or...
